“Touched by dawn, the gilded statue ‘blazed over the citizens like the sun.’” The statue of Constantine was a glimmering statue in pagan style symbolizing the legacy of “the Romans, children of Aeneas and heirs of Augustus” - and it marked the birth of Constantinople
“On May 11, 330, the sun rising behind the Asian hills across the Bosporos, shone for the last time on the ancient city of Byzantion. On that day, the emperor Constantine rededicated the city to himself and to the Fortune of Rome. Henceforth, Byzantion became Constantinople and, as New Rome, it would change the course of history. While the city below lay still in the predawn shadow, the sun reflected off its highest point, a colossal statue of Constantine himself. This was a golden bronze nude with rays emerging from his head, a spear in his left hand, and a globe signifying universal dominion in his right hand. Standing atop a column of purple stone that was almost forty meters tall and banded with victory laurel wreaths, the colossus was a repurposed Apollo.”
The statue displays Constantine’s complex identity: “It reinforced the emperor’s long association with the Solar God and the first emperor of Rome. Over three centuries before, Augustus had chosen Apollo to project the serene power, eternal youth, and classical order of his new golden age. Constantine’s statue also alluded to the colossus of Sol that stood beside the Coliseum in Rome and gave it its name, and it linked New Rome to nearby Troy, the ancient Roman homeland whose patron deity was Apollo. Constantine and his city thus picked up the thread of an old history: the Romans, children of Aeneas and heirs of Augustus…”
The column and the statue atop it stood in “the forum of Constantine…a circular paved plaza. The forum was enclosed by a two tiered colonnade of white marble”.

It took centuries for this structure to be removed. It was a GIGANTIC building. Think how hard it would be to move all the stones. The process of destruction was began by the Crusaders in 1203-1204, the Hippodrome was never fully functional after their heinous acts. The most damaging thing to the Hippodrome was the fires they set in Constantinople, especially the western side. The statues were then removed, most of which were melted to make cheap coins
But despite what I see some saying, the Hippodrome, though falling apart & “greatly damaged” was still somewhat intact after 1204. “Smaller-scale tournaments and activities were organized in the southern half of the Hippodrome” after 1261. In the 15th century, Clavijo recorded seeing the Kathisma still there and in use: “In front of these seats, there is a row of pillars, on which is a high seat, raised on four marble pillars, surrounded by other seats, and at each corner there are four images of white marble, the size of a man; and the emperor is accustomed to sit here, when he views the tournaments”
The Ottomans found it partially in ruins and dismantled it over time. After 1453 “architectural elements such as usable columns and fine stone blocks were taken and re-used in new structures built in the area. In 1521, Sultan Suleiman’s Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha constructed his palace in the space making up the western side of the bleachers of the Byzantine Hippodrome. During the construction of this palace…Ibrahim Pasha removed the west wing of the Hippodrome completely and reused its stones”
“The Sultanahmet Mosque was built in 1609, on the eastern side of the Hippodrome where the bleachers & the adjacent Byzantine imperial palace area were, & the bleachers and the imperial box were completely removed. During the construction, the rubble removed from the foundation pits of the Ibrahim Pasha Palace & the Sultanahmet Mosque was spread on the Hippodrome area, and the racetrack was buried approximately 5 metres below the level of the present-day promenade. A look at the pedestals of the three monuments which have survived on the spina reveals this situation today.”

III. Where a Girl Marries against the Will of her Father, while she is Betrothed to Another. Where anyone is betrothed to a girl, either by the consent of her father, or of any near relative in whom authority in these matters is vested by all, and the girl, in defiance of the wishes of her father, desires to marry another than him to whom she has been betrothed; this we decree shall under no circumstances
be permitted. But if the girl, against the will of her father, should have fled to him who was her choice, and should have married him, both shall be delivered into the power of him to whom, with her father's consent, she had previously been betrothed. And if her mother, or brothers, or other relatives, should grant her wishes, and give her to him whom she has chosen, against the will of her father, those who have plotted this shall pay a pound of gold to whomever the king may direct. Nor shall the act of the parties be valid, but both of them, as has hereinbefore been stated, shall be [77] delivered up, with all their property, to him to whom the girl had already been betrothed. And we decree that this law shall be observed where the father shall have made arrangements concerning the marriage of his daughter, and the amount of the dowry has been agreed upon, and her father dies before the marriage has been concluded; in such a case the girl shall be given to him to whom she had been contracted by either her father or her mother.

The Abbasids: Islam's Golden Age (All Parts)
The
Battle of the great Zab river
The
Abbasid revolution culminated in an epic battle amongst the fertile lands
surrounding the Zab River, the white and black banners soared as the two armies
clashed. Despite being outnumbered the Abbasid army had great confidence after
a string of victories in previous battles. However this time the Umayyad host
was led by the Umayyad Caliph Marwan himself known for being a stubborn
warrior, he led the ferocious Syrian heavy cavalry on a head-on charge against
the Abbasid spear wall a tactic which they have learned from the Syrians
themselves. In this battle, the black banners soared and the white banners cast
low.
The
Umayyads were decisively defeated, Caliph Marwan fled to Egypt but was
assassinated.

Abbasid Court
The
Abbasids, unlike the Umayyads were more inclusive, they welcomed non-Arab
Muslims as part of the government. Many non-Arab Muslims supported the Abbasids
during the Umayyads, which were painted as Tyrants. The Abbasids depended
heavily on Persian families such as the Barmakids when it came to bureaucracy.
Jews
and Christians were considered Dhimmis, they were granted religious freedom and
exemption from military duties, in exchange for a tax called Jiziyah, the
dhimmis were often allowed to hold respectable and even prestigious occupations
in some cases, such as doctors and public officeholders. Jews and Christians
were also allowed to be rich even if they were taxed for being a dhimmi. Dhimmis
were capable of moving up and down the social ladder, though this largely
depended on the particular caliph.

As-Saffah
Abū
al-ʿAbbās ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad usually known by his title as-Saffāḥ or
al-Saffah, was the first caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate, one of the longest
and most important caliphates in Islamic history.
As-Saffāh's
rebel army entered Kufa, a major Muslim center in Southern Iraq. As-Saffah had
not been yet declared caliph. One of his priorities was to eliminate his
Umayyad rival, caliph Marwan II.
His
laqab as-Saffāḥ (السفّاح) means "the Blood-Shedder". It may refer to
his ruthless tactics, or perhaps it was used to instill fear in his enemies.

Baghdad,
The Round City
Baghdad
was once a simple hamlet, a collection of small villages in a strategic
location in between the two great rivers of Euphrates and Tigris, due to it's
strategic location as well as the fertility of the surrounding lands,
Caliph
Al-Mansur commissioned the construction of the city. It was built under the
guidance of the Barmakids. Mansur believed that Baghdad was the perfect city to
be the capital of the Islamic Empire under the Abbasids. The Muslim historian
al-Tabari reported an ancient prediction by Christian monks that a lord named
Miklas would one day build a spectacular city around the area of Baghdad. When
Mansur heard the story, he became very joyful, for legend has it, he was called
Miklas as a child. Mansur loved the site so much he is quoted saying:
"This is indeed the city that I am to found, where I am to live, and where
my descendants will reign afterward".
Baghdad
was originally a round walled-city with a great Mosque at its center and
various palaces surrounded by palm trees spread around it, over time the city
expanded greatly beyond the original round walls which was protected by a secondary
outer wall, the rivers not only provided water for irrigation and steady supply
of drinking water, but
also as a highway for transportation and trade.

Fish was also a useful source of food during a siege. If the enemy could not blockade the city, then they had free ability to send ships out to fish. But, with the chain in the golden horn, limited capacity to fish in the protected area remained behind the chain.
Villehardouin, recording a history of the Fourth Crusade wrote about the skyline of Constantinople as they approached it by sea: “I can assure you those who had never seen Constantinople before gazed very intently upon the city, having never imagined there could be such a fine place in all the world. They noted the high walls and lofty towers encircling it, and its rich palaces and tall churches, of which there were so many no one would have believed it to be true if he had not seen it with his own eyes..."
The artwork in the main picture depicting Constantinople was created by Eric Chauvin, who has made some really cool stuff - he has some more on his profile if you want to check it out
