Estas máquinas fueron usadas en el campo, aunque en un primer tiempo a escala reducida: se creía que doce husos constituían ya una gran instalación. De otro lado, la incómoda posición en que había que colocarse para hilar con dichos instrumentos era inadecuada para los adultos, que veían con asombro cómo niños de 9 a 12 años las manejaban con destreza. De ese modo la abundancia llegó a las familias que hasta entonces habían estado agobiadas por el excesivo número de hijos, mientras que los tejedores pobres se liberaban de la servidumbre en la que habían vivido a causa de la insolencia de los hiladores (...).

El invento y los progresos de las máquinas para reducir el trabajo han tenido una gran influencia en la extensión de nuestro comercio, y asimismo han aumentado el empleo, especialmente de niños, en las industrias algodoneras. Pero los sabios designios de la Providencia implican que en esta vida no haya beneficios que no vengan acompañados de desgracias. Y en estas industrias algodoneras y en fábricas similares hay muchas y obvias desgracias que contrarrestan el crecimiento demográfico que se deriva de la mayor facilidad de trabajo. En esas fábricas se emplean niños de tiernas edades: muchos de ellos, que estaban acogidos en las workhouses de Londres y de Westminster, son trasladados en masa, para hacer el aprendizaje, a industrias situadas a centenares de millas de distancia; en ellas prestan sus servicios ignorados, indefensos y olvidados por aquellas personas a las que la naturaleza o las leyes habían confiado su custodia. Por lo general estos niños están obligados a trabajar demasiado tiempo en ambientes cerrados, con frecuencia durante toda la noche: el aire que respiran está envenenado por el aceite o por otras sustancias utilizadas por las máquinas y nadie se preocupa de sus condiciones higiénicas, al tiempo que los constantes traslados de una atmósfera caliente y densa a otra fría y enrarecida son causa de enfermedades e invalideces, y concretamente de esa fiebre epidémica tan común en esas fábricas. Nos preguntamos si el modo en que estos niños son empleados durante sus primeros años de vida no va en detrimento de la sociedad. Por lo general, al término de su periodo de aprendizaje ya no resisten el trabajo y no son capaces de iniciar otra actividad. Las mujeres no saben coser o tejer y desconocen cualquier otra ocupación doméstica indispensable para ejercer como laboriosas y parsimoniosas mujeres y madres. Esta es una gran desgracia para ellos y para la comunidad, como lo prueba tristemente la comparación entre las familias de los trabajadores agrícolas y las de los obreros de las industrias en general. En las primeras encontraremos aseo, limpieza y bienestar, y en las otras suciedad, harapos y pobreza, aunque su salario sea el doble que el del agricultor. Hay que añadir la falta de una adecuada educación religiosa y de buenos ejemplos, así como que la gran e indiscriminada promiscuidad que reina en estos ambientes es muy dañina para la futura vida moral de estos muchachos. Denunciar estos defectos es también indicar sus soluciones, y en muchas fábricas se han adoptado con verdadera generosidad y notable éxito. Pero, aparte de ello, “la comunidad tiene el derecho de asegurarse que sus miembros no sean deliberadamente ofendidos o abandonados sin atenciones (...).

Desde que se calmó la oposición del vulgo al uso de máquinas para abreviar el trabajo y se convencieron de su utilidad, se han instalado hiladoras en todos los campos de las proximidades de Bolton, sobre todo donde hay abundancia de agua (...).

[En Dukinfiel] esta elaboración del algodón, al tiempo que da trabajo a gente de todas las edades, de otro ha debilitado a muchas personas, o ha retrasado su crecimiento, provocando un alarmante aumento de la mortalidad. Las causas de ello en gran parte deben atribuirse a la nefasta costumbre, justamente desaprobada por el doctor Percival y por otros médicos, de obligar a los niños a trabajar día y noche en las industrias: en ellas las escuadras de muchachos se tumban a dormir en los mismos lechos de los que se ha levantado otra escuadra, impidiendo que las habitaciones sean aireadas".
