English Medieval Knight 1400-1500

TOURNAMENT ARMOUR
Painted for the Osprey book ‘English Medieval Knight 1400-1500’, the main figure is inspired by depictions of mounted knights fighting with blunted swords in the Beauchamp Pageant, a manuscript rich in visual information produced in the 1480s. The armour at the top left is based on surviving pieces of specialist jousting armour of c.1500, with the frogmouth helm bolted to the cuirass, unlike the frogmouth at the bottom of the painting which is associated with Henry V, so dates from much earlier in the century, and would have been strapped to the cuirass. The great bascinet (centre left) survived as a tomb achievement in Wimborne Minster in Dorset, and is fitted with a visor typically used in the foot tourney.
