Machimoi were the
class of native egyptian soldiers in the Ptolemiac kingdom. Seen in art and
described as being armed in a variety of styles, this piece takes inspiration
from a figurine of Hapocartes (Fig.1) found at Fayum, Ptolemaic Arsinoë. Egypt.
dated by Sekunda to the 1st century B.C. based off the shield, in my
opinion reinforced by the style of mail with pteryges or some sort of padding
underneath (subarmalis?). His helmet is based off a terracotta head now housed
in the Allard Pierson museum (Fig.3 musuem number APM14400). The round umbo and
spina are inspired by a Roman period terracotta from the British musuem (Fig. 2
museum number 1843,0507.1039). His sword is a gladius hispaniensis based off a
finding at Soknopaiou Nesos (Fig. 4). Colors of the shield are conjectural.
