This illustration, by Peter Dennis and taken from CAM 228: Teutoburg Forest AD 9, depicts a Roman legion storming a German rampart. With the assaulting troops unable to make any real impression upon the newly constructed palisade, the attack is doomed to failure and Roman prefect, Lucius Eggius, is obliged to call off the assault and pull his men back to reorganize themselves for a second attack.
